I enjoy books that feature well-developed characters and a descriptive writing style, and I often read books with a historical setting like The Orphan Train. Two other recent favorites are The High Divide and The Buried Giant. Once in a while, I also revisit classics such as To Kill A Mockingbird and A Christmas Carol.

If I’m in the mood for a lighter read, I want to pick up something similar to Tony Hillerman’s Navajo detective series, one of my favorite mystery series. Hillerman’s writing is straightforward, and yet richly descriptive of the Southwestern setting and Navajo culture.

I enjoy watching movies both old and new, and in different genres, including suspense films (Mirage and Shutter Island), comedies (Music and Lyrics and Stranger Than Fiction), dramas (The Young Victoria and Saving Mr. Banks), sports movies (The Rookie and The Greatest Game Ever Played), and westerns (Silverado and the newer True Grit). Most often I try to find movies that are uplifting or humorous, or both!
