Literacy DuPage teaches people like you to help a neighbor read, write, speak and understand English better! If you’re interested, there are training sessions being held at IPPL starting on April 9. When you share your time to help other adults in our community, you can build a mutually rewarding one-on-one relationship with your student. You will see direct rewards from their work and take pride in helping students become more independent and comfortable members of our community. Tutors may be retirees, homemakers, or employed full‑time. Tutors need not be experienced in teaching or be bilingual. Tutors, however, must be over 18 years old, have graduated from high school, and be fluent in English.
Volunteer tutors receive a comprehensive training in a series of six workshops, preparing for both Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language instruction. After training, tutors meet with their learners for two hours a week, at a convenient time and location for both. Tutoring is in a comfortable setting of one‑on-one or small group. There is a $25 fee that covers a portion of the cost of the materials you receive during training.
