When I’m looking for a good book, I try to find an author with a unique and powerful voice, who uses that voice to say something that is either new to me or provides new insight into something familiar. No matter what I’m reading, I want to learn something. Books like Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse or Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates have become instant favorites because the authors provided a perspective on life that is so different from my own. Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami and Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger, on the other hand, are favorites because the authors created characters I relate to, and the situations they find themselves in are ones I could see myself facing at some point in time. As far as genre goes, I enjoy contemporary and literary fiction, short stories, and graphic novels.

I also enjoy watching movies and playing video games in my spare time. For movies, I like films that bridge the gap between drama and comedy, with the Coen brothers being my favorite directors. I also like movies that create a lot of tension, but steer away from horror. Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room is one of the best movies I’ve seen in recent years, and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Video games used to be a social experience for me, but now I find myself playing more single player games. I’ve put a good deal of time into Bloodborne, Persona 5 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild recently. And the Pokemon series will always be one of my favorite video game series.
