This year's teen music competition, The Sound, was held on Saturday, June 8. It featured a returning performer, a sibling rivalry amongst triplets, and lots of new faces all competing for a chance at the title and $500 cash prize.
Like many other contestants, our first place winner, Kyra Cain of Downers Grove South, has been singing her entire life. The young songwriter performed two of her favorite original songs. "The whole process of what inspires me right now, putting that on paper, putting it on chords and putting it all together, it's really cool," she said.
Green Bean Groove (Mikie Aylward and Quentin Giron) and second place winner SKY (Sophia Yen) also performed original pieces. SKY performed last year and also placed second. She returned with the goal of showing the audience the "real" her this year by singing a "vulnerable, original song."
"I wasn't really exposed to how everyone has their own kind of style," said SKY. "The Sound exposed me. It showed me how everyone's different in their own way… That prepared me for this year. I learned to be different in my own way."
Newcomer and third place winner, Abbey Collins, heard about The Sound from her mother who is a librarian. She said, "I love singing and try to get out as much as I can." She will continue performing at local places and festivals this summer.
Our other performers were Lizzie Tabachnikov, Secondary Friends (Amelia Giuffre and Hailey Borglin,) and the Soul Sisters (Sammy Aylward and Mandy Aylward.)
The Sound would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, the Gift of Carl Foundation and Countryside Bank. Thank you to everyone who attended and our wonderful performers.
