Lorde's second studio album Melodrama (2017) is a modern masterpiece. Infused with dreamy electropop beats, it's a raw look at heartbreak and solitude. Lorde flawlessly captures emotions like no one else, and her songwriting is powerful and relatable. Many critics have lauded the album for its honesty and cleverness; it received universal acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2018 Grammys. Standout tracks are "Writer in the Dark," "Hard Feelings/Loveless," and "Liability," but every song is catchy and meaningful; there isn't a single skip.

Complex characters, harrowing situations, and shocking choices make up this richly compelling multi-family saga. School integration in Piedmont, North Carolina causes an uproar when Black students from the east side of town join predominantly white high schools on the west. Gee and Noelle, two students from opposite ends of the community, form a strong bond after the integration despite their families' objections. Noelle's mother is racist and refuses to acknowledge Noelle's half-Latina roots, while Gee's mother is a stubborn woman who always decides what's best for him. Never Have I Ever

Created by Mindy Kaling, this coming-of-age tv series is loosely bases on Kaling's childhood experiences. The story focuses on Devi Vishwakumar, a 15-year-old Indian-American Tamil girl from Los Angeles. Devi endures a traumatic year after the loss of her father, and things aren't much better for her at school. She wants to change her social status, but that proves to be difficult. We follow Devi as she deals with her grief, identity, and various family/friend relationships (including a potential romance with her high school crush). While there are serious aspects of the show, it is also full of Kaling's signature wit and humor. It is utterly charming, clever, and sweet.

Scaled and Icy

Twenty One Pilots' sixth studio album, Scaled and Icy (2021), was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic and examines the isolation felt during these unprecedented times. Singer Tyler Joseph wanted to create an upbeat and optimistic sound to combat the bleak state of the world. Scaled and Icy definitely has a more playful pop sound while still examining serious themes and issues. It's essentially a snapshot of the emotional highs and lows of life in quarantine. The album has received generally favorable reviews, with critics noting that it feels more in line with one of their earlier albums, Vessel. As a longtime fan of this band, the tracks that stand out most to me are "Shy Away," "Choker," "Mulberry Street," and "No Chances." Overall, this album is full of catchy songs and profound lyrical messages that make the world feel a little less lonely.
